Across the Harz Mountains - Opportunities of Experience Oriented Field-trips in Environmental Education
Summary
Since the nineteen seventies environmental issues have gained increasing importance in nearly every field of education. With regard to the didactic and methodological implementation of ecologically relevant topics the general consensus is that besides cognitive learning there is also an essential need for learning through experience and action. However, practical work in the past indicates a significant lack of application of this principle.
Two case-studies, one from further education in sport and one from university education in geography and general science, illustrate possible approaches to an environmental education with a greater openness to experience and action: Participants of a hike across the Harz mountains in the North of Germany are being confronted with selected ecological problems of the region on the spot. Sensory perception, adaption of cognitive knowledge and personal activities together allow for a rather broad approach to the relevant issues and jointly support an integrated understanding of the underlying problems
