Trial and Error - Problems with the University Entrance Exam: An Evaluation Study
Abstract
The paper discusses the practical application of a specific approach in educational
evaluation. At its heart there is a feed back instrument which helps to gather and evaluate
data throughout the process of research. The study consists of the following elements: 1st
theoretical overview of evaluation theories, 2nd participant observation in educational
evaluation, 3rd interviews with groups and individuals, 4th accompanying feed back
sessions along the evaluation process, 5th conclusions - perspectives - suggestions.
The object of the evaluation process discribed in the study is the
"Studienberechtigungsprüfung", a special university entrance exam for students
without GCE certificate (= non high-school graduates) and its implications for student
orientation in the academic culture.
Results: 1st The study proves the efficiency of the approach adopted by the evaluation
team. 2nd It pins down organisational problems connected with the examination and the
accompanying preparatory lectures (e.g. little student integration into university structures,
which leads to self-concept of second-rate students).
