Evaluation of the Seminar: "Focal Counselling / Short Term Psychotherapy" for Medical Students

Abstract

We wanted to assess the efficiency of a seminar for medical students. Initially an overview concerning tasks, aims and models of evaluation research is given. The type of evaluation which is used in our study can be described as a combination of an “academic” type of evaluation with an impact evaluation. Further structure, organisation, content and the tools of the seminar which we wanted to evaluate, are presented. The evaluation process, the way the evaluation is conducted, who is involved, and what material is used, are topics that are dealt with. Finally the evaluation content, the findings of this particular evaluation, including the data collected, the interpretations made and the recommendations offered, are summarized. It could be shown, that the students' ability to diagnose correctly increases significantly with their continuous approach toward the elements of pysychoanalytic- therapeutic techniques, such as handling resistance, transference, countertransference and therapeutic neutrality during the seminar.
