Evaluation of A Practical Course for Students in Psycho-Onkology
Abstract
The students participating in a joint medical-psychological seminar were given the
opportunity to become engaged in the support and care of cancer patients. At the beginning
and the end of the seminar a questionnaire was handed out in order to assemble and assess
data such as earlier experiences, attitudes to cancer patients, expectations concerning the
seminar, fear of contact with cancer patients, the subjectively felt threat of cancer and many
more. As far as the recollection of earlier experiences with cancer patients was concerned,
the answers remained stable over the time between the first and the second response to the
questionnaire, which can be interpretet as indicator of a good retest-reliability. The threat of
cancer was lower after the seminar, fear of contact with cancer patients had significantly
decreased. Furthermore, there was a clear tendency in a number of answers towards greater
differentiation, and a more profound background of first-hand experience was evident in the
second response.
