Medicine Study 2000
Alternatives for Learning and Assessment, Teaching and Evaluation

A web-based learning and reviewing tool for the final exam in Medical Chemistry at the University of Vienna
Summary
An analysis of the demands imposed on
the learning situation of our students by
the subject, the structure of the curriculum,
and the size of the institution, led
us to design and maintain a webbased
bulletin board to support their learning
for the final exam. Sample exam questions
were posted by the teachers; an
ensuing virtual dialogue gradually approached
the correct answer in a threaded
discussion. Analysis of the server
logs showed a high number of participants.
With 1% postings per page hit
passive users far outnumbered the active
participants, thus mimicking the classroom
situation. However, it could be
shown that the anonymity and convenience
of participation led to participation
by a different population. The registered
high user satisfaction was offset by the
stringent demands on the teachers' time.
