Medicine Study 2000
Alternatives for Learning and Assessment, Teaching and Evaluation
Peter FREY (Bern, Schweiz)
Paper or PC? Computer Aided Learning under Evaluation
Summary
The objective of this study was to assess
the attitudes medical students from
Bern, Switzerland have towards using
various learning resources (books, videotapes,
CD-ROMs, Internet). In
1999, 281 of 429 medical students
(65%) in the 1st, 3rd and 5th year responded
to a questionnaire.
Results: For learning and study purposes,
88% frequently used printed resources
(textbooks), 28% used the library,
and only 5% frequently used
videotapes, computer aided learning
(CAL) or the Internet. In our computer
lab, only 31% of the CD-ROM-based
instructions are used longer then 15
minutes. Among our students, 87%
have private access to a PC and 51%
even have an Internet modem. But
there is a gap between private Internet
use (51%) and its application for learning
purposes (5%). This demonstrates
that the rate of computer literacy
among medical students, in itself, is not
at all poor, but nonetheless rarely practiced
for learning and study purposes.
