William FULTON (Vienna, Austria)
Are Good Teachers Born, or Can They Be Made?
Summary
University professors find themselves in
the awkward position of having to perform
a job for which they have received
no formal training, namely, teaching. Why is it that those who provide formal
training at the highest level for other
professions receive no such training for
their own? Is it because "good teachers
are born, not made, " as conventional wisdom
suggests? Or can effective teaching
be learned, and if so, how?
After examining these questions, I come
down firmly against the conventional
wisdom. The literature on faculty training
and my own experience at Webster
University in Vienna strongly suggest
that effective teaching can be learned, and in this paper two key elements of
faculty development are presented:
faculty training and reflection about teaching.
