Project Oriented Teaching: Routines at Schools - Frontiers at Universities
Summary
Since the eighties the didactic as well as the practical training of scholars
has been considered to be of primary importance at the Institute of Geography of
the Vienna University. While in the past several efforts to improve the
qualification standards of the teacher training institutions outside Vienna
turned out to be unsuccessful primarily due to the unwillingness of the
scientifical staff to increase the number of teaching oriented training courses
the steps taken for a better standard at the Vienna institute proved to be
highly effficient. The most decisive step certainly was the introduction of the
socalled cooperation projects, a model showing that university and school can
successfully work together. These cooperation projects made it possible for
every student to participate fully self responsible in project and action
oriented teaching units. Teachers are not allowed to intervene but are required
to observe and to reflect whats going on due to the course of the project or
fieldwork thus gaining a complete new understanding of his pupil`s abilities.By
this implementation of practical training facilities at universities a new era
could be established.
