Didactic Aspects of Field Trips, Study Tours, and Practical Training

Christian Knut Kniescheck (Vienna, Austria)

Potentials of Experience - What Historians Could Learn from Tour Guides

Summary

Historians should pay more attention to an exciting dramaturgy of study trips, because learning, understanding and remembering can be stimulated and supported by emotions. Tourism provides many examples of well made, that means target-group orientated and subject related representations of history. Tourism is much more interested in good customer relations than university history departments are. After reflections on the formal aspects of experience, on aura (Benjamin, Jauss) and on sublimity (Kant) the essay's purpose is to concentrate on subjects like sense perception, good story telling, good representing and social contacts. Besides, the author stresses that there are many key qualifications students could acquire on study trips.
