External Influences on the Quality of University Programs
Summary
This paper discusses three external elements that influence the quality of university programs in the USA: competition, professional groups, and accrediting organizations.
In education as in the free market, increasing competition leads to innovation and experimentation, which can significantly improve the product. Professional groups can have a positive effect on the curriculum by lobbying for changes that reflect the constantly changing work environment. And accrediting organizations promote continuous quality improvement through regular assessment of programs and the propagation of best practices.
