Quality Assurance of University Teaching by Computer Aided Evaluation (Teaching Evaluation Assistant)

Abstract

Quality assurance in higher education usually takes place through standardized questionnaires. The problem of this kind of evaluation is its summative character, so that the consequences of the outcome cannot be applied to the teaching situation at hand. Moreover, the time of asking the questions and getting the results fall so much apart that the immediate motivation usually cannot be used for concrete steps of development. The computer program Teaching Evaluation Assistant (TEA) has been developed to enable university teachers to do an instant formative evaluation of their classes. The students type the answers to the questions which are jointly developed right into the computer so that the results are available right away. They can be discussed and further elaborated with a view to changing the teaching behaviour right away. Therefore the Teaching Evaluation Assistant can be seen as a promising tool for personal and organizational development.
