Academic Staff Development in Australia in the 1990:
A Government-driven Quality Agenda
Summary
This paper discusses the impact of the Australian Government's higher
education policy on university policy and higher education research and
development activities. The new quality agenda of the Department for
Employment, Education and Training (DEET) can be integrated with the
original idea of the university and its educational principles. This is
illustrated by examples of major DEET-funded staff development programs
for senior academic and administrative staff at seven universities in
Queensland. These staff development programs are characterised by a
multiplier effect, action research and an organisational culture which
recognises and rewards quality and excellence not only in research, but
also in teaching and management.
