Summary
This paper reflects - in a personal way - the development of staff development and training in the UK University system over the last twenty five years. It comments on the structures, attitudes and tensions concerning staff development, as well as on a national level as on an institutional level. Being a Director of Personnel it is especially important to the author that all the university's staff are capable of undertaking the tasks for which they were appointed.
