Beside reviewing the factors that have contributed to the incresed need for staff developement the author gives a brief overview of successful staff development approaches. His recommandations for staff development practices for the future result from a survey on policies, practices and procedures in staff development in higher education in more than 100 different institutions in more than 9 countries.
