University Reform - Which Direction to Take?
Comtributions for the Search after an adequate Identity

University Autonomy
Summary
There is neither a reason to idealize
autonomy as a typical sign of a former
corporate state, nor it is reasonable to
expect autonomy to remain as an invariable
constant in a framework of increasing
social importance of producing
and reproducing knowledge. Therefore
the subject 'university and power'
has to be tackled again. The relation of
constitutionally requested freedom of
science and university law is not determined
in an unique way, and at the
same time the threat to misuse autonomy
for hiding corporate interests is
not eliminated. The valid request for
universities to unify production of
knowledge and teaching can be realized
in independent systems similar to
municipalities in Austrian law.
