This contribution deals with the basic qualifications of graduated
Austrian students of social sciences economics to play occupational
roles and their social competence. Data from a nationwide inquiry
have been analyzed, referring to graduates from 1988 to 1994. Occupational
requirements and expectations, experienced at the beginning of their
occupational life, were compared with the contents and results of
university education. One of the essential findings was ,tha tnearly
all of extrafunctional requirements on the job, like social skills,
management abilities, basic motivations etc. were not provided by
the university in an adequate manner. There are considerable differences
in matching or mismatching occupational requirements, depending
on the kind of expected skills and abilities. The use of factor
analysis shows three dimensions of extra functional competences,
which are described in this article.
