A changed structure for courses of study, new curricula, and the
use of information technology in tuition are presenting new challenges
to university teaching staff and administrative staff alike. To
meet these challenges successfully, staff development sections must
respond positively and formulate suitable training offers. The areas
of information-handling, media handling and knowledge management
should be integrated into internal training and continuing training,
and pedagogic motivation should be raised at all levels. It seems
that there is a need for universities to reassess their role as
learning organisations. This entails a high degree of responsibility
on the part of those providing teaching and conducting research,
but it also provides the possibility of transforming the principle
of life-long learning into an active reality.
