Summary
This paper considers present trends and foreseeable changes during the professional lifetime of those who are now entering the study of medicine. These considerations help to determine the competences which doctors will need in the first half of the new century. In conclusion, the paper outlines the design of a curriculum which aims to help students to develop these competences for the 21st Century.
