Formal Evaluation of Teaching in Austrian Medical Schools Should Be Preceeded by a Fandamental Reform of the Medical Curriculum
Summary
Many Austrian and international studies have shown an urgent need for the reform of traditional medical curricula. Such a reform should be made before a system of formal teaching evaluation is introduced in Austrian medical schools. Evaluation procedures, however, should be an integral part of the new educational system and should thus be included in the planning. Work on the new curriculum should begin in 1997 in order to meet the target date of 2002, by which time the curriculum should go into effect, as mandated by national law. A medical education unit responsible for coordinating planning and discussions within the faculty should be established.
