Reliablility and Validity of the Final Examination in Medical Chemistry (Partrigorosum Medizinische Chemie) at the University of Vienna Medical School
Summary
The first part of the final is a written examination composed of 20 mostly open-ended questions. The reliability, validity, and influence on student learning behaviour was explored by analysing 922 exam papers graded by 6 examiners. The overall reliability was high (Cronbachs alpha >0.80), and content validity and face validity were ensured. In the Case of one examiner a possible influence of examiner on test scores was detected. Consecutive retakes of the exam by students who had failed lead to a highly significant improvement between the first and the second attempt but further repeats lead to no improvement of the mean scores. There was also a highly significant correlation between duration of study and mean test scores with older students performing poorer.
