Sociological Research as Contribution to Evaluation and Development of Medical Education in Austria?
Experiences with a 12 Years Series of Research Projects 1980-1992
Summary
Between 1980 and 1992 the Austrian Federal Minstry of Science had contracted a series of sociological reserch projects on Medical Education in Austria. Results showed primarily a lot of dis-satisfaction from the side of students as well as faculty with various aspects of Medical Education. This results were underlined by problematic patterns of delays in the course of study (much extra time invested in theoretical fields and basic sciences) and a dramatic under-utilization of formal lectures.
Nevertheless, the findings were not successful to stimulate change or sufficiently support other developments towards change up till now. As a consequence of a new trend towards decentralisation of responsibility in Higher Education and because of tight finances, the research could become useful again in self-analysis and reconstruction of Austrian Medical Education.
