Criticism of Patriarchy versus Gender Studiey?
Reflections of Experiences with Study Plan Reforms
Summary
Possibilities of integrating the social category "gender" into the initial didactic and
educational teacher training program were developed and tested within the framework of the four-
year (1990-1994) study reform project "PIL" (Criticism of Patriarchy into Teacher Studies) at
the Technical University of Berlin, Department of Education. In my article, I outline the aims,
conceptualization and experiences of the project and discuss the hypothesis that the paradigm
change from "Women`s Studies" to "Gender Studies" did not
increase the chances of institutionalization for educational projects with a feminist
perspective and which look at patriarchy in a critical manner. The article ends by describing
strategies for integrating "gender" into initial teacher training and commenting on the
published materials of the PIL project.
