International Perspectives in Postgraduate Education and Training
Portrait of the Researcher as a Young Dog: The Italian PhD Student
Summary
The most important system of postgraduate education in Italy is the "dottorato di ricerca"
(research doctorate), which was only introduced into the university system in 1980-1983.
At the moment, there are still concentrations in this system. Some concern the practical
organization of courses: these can be resolved by a more rational use of available resources.
Other contradictions are instead more profound. In particular, it is still not clear what is the
connection between the research doctorate and university recruiting policies.
In this paper, I first describe the structure of a PhD course in Italian universities. I then
examine the institution of the doctorate, making a number of remarks with some data on
past experiences. Thirdly, I attempt to demonstrate the link between the contradictions of
the doctoral system and those more generally manifested by the Italian universities. The
final section sets out my conclusions.
