International Perspectives in Postgraduate Education and Training
Initial Appointment and Further Training: The Situation of Doctoral Candidates at German Universities
Summary
The article provides an overview on selected findings on the situation of junior staff in
German higher education working on their doctoral thesis. The data presented and
discussed is based on a German survey which is part of an 'International Survey on the
Academic Profession'. The first part of the article gives an overview on the structure of
doctoral training in German higher education and of longstanding and recent debates on the
situation of the 'Doktoranden'. The second part provides basic information on the
employment and working conditions of the doctoral staff that responded to our
questionnaire, and addresses further three issues: aspects influencing the work on the
doctoral thesis and involvement in research activities, self-assessment of training and
competence, the professional orientation and career prospects of doctoral staff.
