International Perspectives in Postgraduate Education and Training
Debates on Doctoral Training in the United Kingdom
Summary
In 1993, the government in the United Kingdom issued a White Paper entitled Realising
Our Potential that set out new plans for the operation of the Research Councils, the
development of research and the future of postgraduate training.
The ideas on postgraduate training form part of a long running debate about the form and
content of postgraduate work at doctoral level. In this article, I examine the issues that are
raised in the White Paper, together with other developments that have taken place in the
UK including a training programme in the social sciences.
