International Perspectives in Postgraduate Education and Training
Editorial Introduction
Issues concerned with postgraduate education and training are now high on the agenda
worldwide. In these circumstances, it seemed appropriate to us to devote a special issue of
this journal to some of the current issues and debates to which social and educational
researchers can comment on from a number of different vantage points: as policy-makers,
as practitioners and as social investigators. The papers draw on material from a range of
countries and higher educational systems: Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Italy and
the United Kingdom. While doctoral studies and postgraduate education and training is a
twentieth century phenomena across these countries, it is very recent in Austria and Italy
and has only been the subject of considerable debate in the last ten years in the United
Kingdom. Nevertheless, there are a series of common themes that demand attention:
- The role of education v training
- Academic v vocational purposes of postgraduate education
- Organisational structures; especially graduate schools
- Selection of students
- Supervisory practice
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Time to degree
- Submission and completion rates
All these topics are considered by the contributors to this volume. Altogether they point to
the need for policy analysis, research and critical evaluation of current practice. Clearly, the
issues are not confined to one country nor one disciplinary approach. The demand for
comparative studies of postgraduate education and training is considerable as they have the
potential to advance our understanding of education while contributing to policy and
practice. It is intended that the papers in this issue are a contribution to this approach.
