Between Self-reflection and System Analysis

In Search of a Paradigm for the Evaluation of Teaching in Higher Education

Summary

A student and a university teacher analyze two different approaches of evaluating teaching in higher education. The action research projekt "Researching While Teaching" originated in the discussion of the Senate's Commission in Higher Education at Innsbruck University. It was introduced to offer a guided self-analysis of one's own teaching commitments aimed at improving the partizipating university teachers' immediate practice. In a different approach a student union's initiative was introduced to ask students to rate their classes by means of questionnaires. By analyzing the two approaches, which have their origins in different theoretical orientations in the theory of science, the authors discuss their findings in the broader context of evaluation in higher education.
