University Reform - Which Direction to Take?
Comtributions for the Search after an adequate Identity
Sigurd HÖLLINGER (Vienna, Austria)
The Renaissance of our Universities is Immanent. Even though the Culture is More Resistant to Change than the Structures
Summary
The increasing social importance of
education and science tends to increasing
economic independence of European
Universities to improve performance
and effectiveness. Both the roots
of the present system and the efforts
propagating it are discussed and summarized
by several examples. The
whole system of higher education is
fundamentally restructured, and the
Universities have to redefine their position
as an independent provider for
research and teaching. Thus also the
government is requested to explore
new methods, simultaneously remaining
operative in important fields without
interfering with a general entrepreneurial
independence of the Universities.
