Higher Education by Mouse Click – Virtualisation of Universities as Technical Solution of Institutional Problems?

The article deals with the status of multimedia in higher education in the near future. The base of our statements is the evaluation of a large German virtual university project. In the support of virtual learning settings in higher education, two arguments are often used: it improves the quality of teaching and ensures the status of the universities in a growing international market. The relationship between costs and potential benefits of virtual learning settings has to be taken more into account, during the development process and the use of multimedia modules. With regard to the competition at global markets for higher education, we especially refer to experiences with traditional distance learning where mere offers do not guarantee any demand. In our opinion, two essential prerequisites for the success of the virtual university would be the separation of the development process from the exaggerated expectations, and an increase of professional standards at the organizational level.
