Information Gathering and Structuring in the Design of a Qualification Profile
Summary
The new law on Austrian university education (UniStG 97) grants greater autonomy
to federal universities and requires a redefinition of all curricula by the year
2002. Vienna's medical school established the MedizinCurriculum Wien project
(MCW) to prepare a new curriculum under the supervision of the Committee on
Educational Affairs (StuKo).
The paper describes the processes involved with the first stage of curriculum
development, the design of a qualification profile for our graduates. MCW
developed a four-step procedure that was used in two sequential rounds leading
towards a genuine "Wiener Qualifikationsprofil". Beyond preparation of
appropriate materials and information of stakeholders, this procedure relies on
two central strategies, the gathering and structuring of feedback data.
The paper also reflects one of the central contributions MCW makes to the
international discussion of medical school reform: An experience with a very
realistic scenario in university reform today.
