Reflexions upon Science
Roland Fischer (Vienna and Klagenfurt)
Science and Consciousness of Society
Summary
What holds societies together? In traditional societies it is often a belief in
Higher Powers, like prophets or kings. Our western enlightened societies were
long understood as societies of knowledge in the sense that this
society-integrating function was attributed to scientific knowledge. Today we
must rid ourselves of the illusion that there is - outside ourselves - an
authority that tells us what to do. We must acknowledge that we live in a
society of decisions. Intentional joint decisions require the ability for
self-observation. This is how new demands on science come up that consist in
developing connections but also in exposing them to contradiction.
