Educating Doctors for the 21st Century

Frequent diseases of women and their biopsychosocial impact.
Report on an interdisciplinary approach to teaching.
Summary
Students were introduced to the clinical reasoning process through the discussion of several gender-specific conditions. Theoretical presentations were followed by application of the principles. Students took histories in outpatient clinics or discussed taped history-taking sessions. The gender-specific approaches to risk factors such as smoking or eating disorders helped the students to understand the biopsychosocial impact of disease on women. The integrative approach to disease management and the role of the physician in society and the health system is not part of the standard curriculum but was highly appreciated by the students.
