Community-based Teaching in the U.S.A
Summary
Community-Based Teaching (CBT) is quickly becoming an integral part of undergraduate and graduate medical education in the United States. This movement is based on the understanding the majority of medical work occurs in community-based ambulatory care and thus training has to move into this setting as well. Programs vary in size and scope from electives to required rotations, one-time or episodic events to fully integrated and longitudinal courses. The reward for training include the exposure to "real life" for trainees, and incentives for continuing education on part of the community preceptors. Amongst the key challenges are meeting logistical requirements and maintaining educational standards in a multitude of decentralized training sites.
