Using Problem-based Learning to Cover the Basics of Plant Diversity
Summary
A bachelor's degree program in biology using problem-based learning was initiated in September 1996, at the University of Quebec at Montreal on an experimental basis. The program integrates problem-based learning throughout its entire curriculum of three years. The first two years are intended to complete a general training in the field of biology and the last one permits students to specialize in one of three options. One of the most important topic under study during the first year is basic plant biology. We created a Plant diversity unit that combines aspects of plant morphology, anatomy, taxonomy and evolution as main issues, and aspects of physiology and genetics as secondary issues.
