A Primary Care Clerkship in General Practice
Summary
Medical students should be confronted as early as possible with the discrepancy of clinical problems existing between university hospitals and outpatient ambulatory care. This is best achieved in a primary care setting, where students, in addition, can learn the problem-oriented approach of the general practitioner towards any reason for contact. It was therefore the aim of the present project to establish a clercship in general practice with guidelines to ensure some consistancy within the clerkship and to define common learning goals. The clerkship in general practice - family medicine consists of 4 different consecutive moduls which can be done with different preceptors. Each modul lasts for one week and consists of 3 parts: theory, practice and experience. The participation of the student as well as the performance of the preceptor are evaluated in a standardized manner. We think, that this consecutive system of moduls establishes structure and content of a clerkship which can also be transformed to other clinical specialities.
