Commitment for Change:
Reflections on and evaluation of an intervention study to improve communication skills in medical interviews.
Summary
For some years an increasing number of studies propose concepts of improving communication in the physician-patient interaction. At the same time the, commitment for change approach is discussed as an integrated part of continuing medical education (CME). In a randomized controlled intervention study we determined whether patient - centered communication skills can be taught to residents in Internal Medicine with a time - restricted behaviorally oriented intervention. There was a substantial improvement in most items relating to the teaching objectives in the intervention group whereas no significant changes could be observed in the control group. Our results show that a time limited, highly structured intervention improves residents` communication skills. Relevant to this study the recently to CME introduced "commitment for change" approach is evaluated and discussed.
