Between Frontlines

The Status of Women's Studies at the Department of Sociologie at the GRUWI Faculty

Summary

This paper deals with the integration of Women´s Studies into the curriculum of the Department of Sociology at the University of Vienna. Women´s Studies, a field which as an academic agenda is still very much underrepresented at the university, has been taught as "Spezielle Soziologie" at the Department of Sociology for about five years now. The author sums up her experiences gained at co-ordinating Women´s Studies lectures which are offered to sociology students as well as students of other disciplines. Although Women´s Studies have turned out to be a popular and a widely accepted subject, its organization remains a challenging task which requires sensitive handling and balancing of divergent and sometimes conflicting interests.
