Dehierarchization or Deconstruction of Difference
Critical Notes on Structural Implications of Affirmative Action Programs for Women
Summary
Women´s politics are generally based on certain feminist theoretical premises appertaining
to the discrimination of women. Up to date the concept of gender difference has played a
central role in the discussion. Women´s politics that adhere to this concept aim at
revalorizing the female side, so as to effect a dehierarchisation of gender. Contrary to
this approach this paper proposes the social construction of gender, which conceives the
development of gender differences as a mechanism of social classification which constantly
produces, with the help of gender difference, the necessary prerequisits fo gender hierarchy. A
politics of equalization which endorses this still relatively new concept should aim at a
deconstruction of gender in order to abolish gender affiliation as a socially relevant criterion
for all members of society.
