This profile explains the history and structure of staff development at the University of Plymouth. It is one of the "new universities" which means that is was formerly a polytechnic. The article tracks the history of the internal and external changes which have led to the current structure of provision for training and supporting staff. It details particular strategies including an induction course for new staff; a change agent programme to reach all teaching staff; a staff development programme open to all staff and a postgraduate course for those staff who wish to research and deepen their understanding of educational theory and their own practice.
