Gesprächsstil und Beziehungsdefinition in konfliktiven Dialogen

Summary

Psychological experiments have shown that women and men react differently in competitive situations. Taking these results into account I have tried to find some similar situations in verbal competitive situations, such as argumentations. Analysing dialogues of the basic structure lecturer - female student and lecturer - male student I mainly described the controversial style of one female and one male student and interpreted the definition of the relation they established.I found that the conversational style of the women was more co-operative than that of the men. This style, as opposed to a more confrontational style, is more likely to produce subordinate status in conversation. Furthermore I tried to demonstrate that the speech behaviour of foreign students and the speech behaviour used with them by higher status male speakers contains verbal and non-verbal indicators which lead the participants to constitute an unserious "small talk" level of conversation. This underlines the same tendency to create conversational subordination that is already shown in the lecture-female student dialog.
