Warum studiert Frau/Mann Fremdsprachen?
Summary
In addition to summarizing the research already done on the question of women and foreign language studies and to describing the research design the author gives a resume of the discussions with both female and male groups of foreign language students. Participants in both groups experiences an intense concern with their own identities; specific gender differences reveal themselves in that female students attribute this concern to the foreign language, whereas male students attribute it to their affinity for the foreign country and assign a secondary level of importance to the language in relation to their search for identity. Considering their tentative nature, the findings of this exploratory study are discussed in relation to socialization theories. Special significance is given to the psychoanalytically oriented approaches for a new understanding of the emotional dimension of foreign lanuage learning.
