Teaching and Staff Development at Austrian Universities

Ada PELLERT (Graz, Austria)

Teaching Quality and Staff Development at Austrian Universities - Status Quo and Opportunities of Development

What are the starting points for reforming universities concerning teaching and staff development? Teaching is seen as tiresome burden without reputation; staff development degenerates to pure staff administration; the changing image of the university as an organization might lead to changes in both areas. The social environment of the university is especially interested in the teaching function of universities; taking staff development more serious will be an prerequisite for increased institutional autonomy. The main challenges are to be seen in the development of forms of staff development and modes of teaching and learning, that support the positive specifics of universities.
