Internationalization of Austrian Universities
Hans PECHAR (Vienna)
The Impact of Globalization on Higher Education
Summary
This article interprets the quantitative
and qualitative impact of globalization
on the international activities of universities.
On the one hand, the "European
dimension" is strengthened by the decreasing
role of national states in higher
education policy. On the other, universities
become more and more autonomous
and start to compete with each
other not only for reasons of academic
reputation but for reasons of recruiting
students and research fands. For this
competition cannot be restricted to
national borders in the future universities
have to prove good in an international
environment. Furthermore, the
rise of an European "higher education
area" is sketched.
