Combining Problem-based Learning with Technological Support

Zusammenfassung

This paper describes an approach that has been developed to try and combine the benefits of problem-based learning (PBL), and similar action learning methodologies, with technological support. The support provided by the software system developed is designed to mitigate against some of the possible problems in the PBL approach (particularly that of human resource availability), whilst providing concrete support for aspects of the PBL process. The approach is general, but has been applied in the first instance to the Artificial Intelligence subject in a computer science course. We describe the software system developed, which consists of two related but separate packages --- the CourseWeb, and the ProblemWeb. These packages are implemented using the technology of the World Wide Web (WWW). The ways in which the CourseWeb and the ProblemWeb support and supplement the PBL methodology are explained and explored.

We have developed a four-pronged approach to assessment, consisting of exam, self and peer evaluation of individual contributions, project submissions, and group process marks. We discuss the appropriateness of these assessment items, and the student and teacher evaluation of the effectiveness of the learning achieved as compared with the same subject matter covered in a standard lecture style class.
