Visuals for Routine Lectures - Slides or Multimedia? A Comparison
Summary
The paper compares the conventional slide-show based introductory lecture for a course in neuro- and sensory physiology with its new multimedia version. The preparation of digital presentations is far more time consuming due the increase of options. However the creation of "dynamic" slides by scripting various audiovisual "actors" allows significantly improved explanatory resolution of temporal and functional aspects. While this has lead to improved reception by the students care must be taken not to exceed the usual rate of information flow. Otherwise the beneficial effects of multimedia presentations may be more than compensated by the impression of sensory and mental overload.
