Affirmative Action for Women at Universities and Art Schools as a Legal and Political Challenge
Summary
Due to affirmative action programmes as provided by the Bundesgleichbehandlungsgesetz
(federal equal treatment amendment), the Frauenförderungsplan (women´s advancement
plan) of the Secretary of Research and the pertinent university legislation for the
authorization of women´s promotion a rather sophisticated level of legal measures against
female underrepresentation in academia has been achieved. It is now the responsibility of the
respective university executives to effectively and promptly realize these legal instruments
so that the enormous career incline between men and women at universities no longer is such an
embarrassing feature of the Austrian academic landscape.
